“This is my 2nd set of the Defender LTX and they are the best tire I have ever had. Smooth, quiet, and great in all weather. Also wears great. I have tried Goodyear, Firestone, and Hankook–were so bad I drove out of the dealer and right to a tire store to trade them in for the Michelin Defender.
I tried them once and they lasted 25k miles. Terrible high-speed ride and noisy. Never again. Also over the years Dunlop and Continental. All garbage tires. Either failed or a lousy ride especially at high speeds. Two sets of Goodyears had cracks in the sidewall the first year of having them.
Goodyear said nothing they could do. The one time I had Dunlop on a trip the tires had a terrible high-speed shake. I stopped at a tire dealer during my trip and they confirmed the 2 tires were bad. Since all these tire problems over the years, I will only put Michelins on my cars!!”Review

“4 years ago, my wife and I were shopping tires and investigating what we thought would be an acceptable tire for our 2006 Sienna. We went to Sears and they were not selling or installing tires due to the store closing.
We were told that Sears has slod the rights to the Weatherhandler we normally bought that Hankook now owns the rights to the tire. We went to XYZ and they had the tire in stock.
Just to test the honesty factor I had one brought to my Sienna to compare tread design and by golly, it was the same. 90,000 mile tread wear? Not exactly but we actually got 96,000 miles on these tires (understand we follow the maintenance plane 100%) and, since I have the tools, I rotate the tire myself, maintain proper air pressure and regular alignment if something doesn’t feel (right).
Numerous trips from Knoxville, Tennessee to Monson, Maine – sometimes twice in a year has been tire trouble free. Don’t let the Hankook name fool you. This is a quality product and performs just as advertised with the owners’ maintaining regularly.”Douglas D.

“I put these tyres on hoping to get 80,000 km out of them. After multiple Kimberley trips including the Murchison and Gascoyne, I realized they had surpassed my greatest expectations. They are starting to look like they have done a few km now but with plenty of tread left on them, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect 150,000 km out of them.
They have taken me uphill and down Dale, from highways to bush tracks, mud to beach, and everywhere in between. While they cost more than the last set of AT tires on the car which got us 40,000km for slightly per tire they are still going strong. If you want quality, pay for quality, maintain them with alignment, rotation, and balance when required and they will be worth their weight in rubber!”Tony R
4. Continental CrossContact LX20:

Hey Subaru Forester owners, Continental’s CrossContact LX 20 is here to fulfill your tire needs. These tires are designed for optimum performance and enhanced safety for your vehicle.

The unique tread design in these tires is what helps your tire perform well in both dry and wet conditions. The traction is significantly increased on these surfaces.
You might lack confidence when traversing these slippery surfaces, on your Forester worry not my friends as the CrossContact will keep you attached to the surface.

“I figured I’d take the time to review this tire now that I’ve owned it for 2.5 years and 45k miles. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the tire. All these jokers who say they wear uneven are either under/over-inflating or have suspension/alignment issues.
I have these tires on a 2013 F150 2WD and I have had ZERO issues with wear, vibrations, or anything. I’ve even taken them down gravel roads and beat them up on small “babyhead” rocks on forest roads in Pisgah National Forest. With 45k miles on them, the tire looks approximately at half wear, which is about right since it is a 70k mile tire.
On my specific truck, I have always run 36 psi in the front and 35 psi in the rear based on the weight of my vehicle and “eyeballing” the pad size to the pavement. If you take the time to keep your tires properly inflated, even if checking once a month, you WILL get the life out of these tires. They provide great dry traction and surprisingly great wet traction.
It doesn’t snow here, so I cannot comment on that front. The only complaint, if it is one, is that I have small chips in the rubber from taking them on gravel roads. It isn’t affecting the ride at all though, so meh.”Oubbascooba

“I’ve known about the Alenza for quite a while, but didn’t have an SUV. My XC90 came with top-line Michelins in nearly-new condition, and they were appallingly bad. I took the opportunity to swap to the Alenza Plus despite the amount of wear remaining, & I couldn’t be much more satisfied without defying the laws of physics.
They’ve now been through 2 Midwest winters without any difficulty (shrugged off 8″ of snow like it was barely there), summer jaunts down the highways, winding country roads, & visiting family & friends down long gravel drives (& sometimes no roads at all), & they’ve been flawless. Quiet, comfortable, predictable, & confidence-inspiring whether taking a highway cloverleaf at highway speeds or pulling stuck vehicles out of snow banks, these are supremely satisfactory.
That level of confidence is worth the cost of purchase alone, & knowing that these tires are rated to last me another 70K miles is just mind-boggling. Keep up the great work, Bridgestone! I look forward to whatever will replace these (something 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake rated, I presume) as those will almost certainly be my next tires.”MikeD
6. Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015:

After test-driving numerous all-terrains, the Yokohama Geolander A/T G015 stands out for blending capable performance across paved roads, muddy trails, rocky landscapes, and more.
Through my experience off-roading on these Yokohamas, they dominate surfaces from snowy hills to sandy dunes thanks to the durable tread compound and sturdy construction.
The treads incorporate a unique triple polymer blend designed to withstand miles of rocky paths and continue gripping effectively. Even when flying over bumpy dirt trails, these tires add confidence and control so you can focus on the adventure.
Despite the rugged capabilities, you never feel like I’m sacrificing on-road comfort with the Geolander A/T G015s. The specialized tread pattern delivers a quiet, smooth ride when cruising down highways with Forester. Advanced contouring and contact design make these tires adapt easily between off-road exertion and relaxed driving.
One feature that impresses me is the circumferential notches built across the treads. These grooves efficiently channel water out from under the tires, preventing hydroplaning situations even when I get caught in heavy downpours on the freeway.
For all-terrain versatility and longevity, it’s hard to find a better value than these Yokohama tires. They come with an impressive 60,000 limited-mile warranty and 30-day guarantee – a testament to their durability.
If you need a tire for your Forester to rely on for off-road strength and on-road comfort, you must consider the Geolander A/T G015.
What I like
- Its good performance on a variety of terrain dirt roads to highways ensures balanced performance without sacrificing efficiency or comfort.
- Its eye-catching design of rugged sidewall and bold tread pattern adds an element of style to our vehicle.
- Noise reduction on paved roads makes rides more enjoyable.
What I dislike
- It may struggle in extreme snow and ice conditions.
- Low fuel efficiency.
7. Toyo Open Country A/T III:

“I bought these tires (37-13.50-R17) hoping for the best. I knew when the tire shop balanced them they were going to be great. It took very minimal weight to balance them. The guy said they were as round as a Michelin street tire.
They are awesome! I rotate every 3000-3500 miles. I have 25K miles on them and they look great. No doubt I’ll get 60K+ out of them. I use my truck for daily driving, work, and off-road. They worked flawlessly on the trails at Uwharrie National Forest and others. You will not be disappointed” Skeddie
8. Nitto Ridge Grappler:
Load Range:12 PLY F
Load Index:128
Traction: A
Temperature: B
Max PSI: 80PSI
If you own a Subaru Forester and want to upgrade your tires, you may have come to the Nitto Ridge Grappler. These tires are specifically developed to fulfill the needs of off-road enthusiasts while also giving a smooth and pleasant ride on pavement.
At first glance, you’ll notice the Ridge Grappler’s unique aesthetic thanks to an innovative sidewall design. But beyond looks, Nitto built this tire for performance across the terrain.
Deep shoulder lugs and staggered blocks provide tremendous grip ascending loose dirt trails while Void ratios maintain contact for responsive steering and braking. Providing the confidence you lack while driving your Forester in treacherous terrains.
I’ve put the Ridge Grappler through its paces climbing over steps and craters that leave other all-terrains spinning. Impressively, tight-pitched center tread blocks also create a quiet and peaceful ride when cruising down the freeway after a long day on the trails.
The adapted hybrid composition handles pavement with precision despite lugging extra weight from sticky mud or gravel.
During development, Nitto focused heavily on durability as well. Thick tread rubber resists uneven wear while reinforced sidewalls, protect from punctures or damage from off-camber impacts.
After hundreds of miles through the backcountry, your set will still grip aggressively and look new thanks to innovations like Stone Ejectors preventing compacted debris.
If you are intermediate to advanced off-roaders also needing reliable tread life, the Nitto Ridge Grappler is a premier option to equip your Forester.
I’m extremely pleased with the traction, responsiveness, and resilience. They’re ready for wherever your next big adventure with Subaru Forester.
What I like
- Ideal for city driving and epic off-road adventures
- Eye-catching design
- Smooth and quiet
What I dislike

- Slightly expensive

“I have had these tires about 3 years and have close to 40,000 miles on them. I work in the power industry and have to drive for work in some of the worst weather conditions. I can honestly say I have been impressed with this tire.
They are slightly louder than my factory tires but they perform well in rain, snow, and surprisingly on ice. There is no tire out there that performs perfectly on ice but I have been in situations many times on icy hillsides with these and my truck pulls out and goes.
Being a heavy truck it is surprising how well these perform. They are extremely hard to puncture also. I had a bolt puncture one tire and it didn’t completely make it through the tire. Very impressed with how they wear and perform. I’m getting ready to purchase another set.”Murph

Buying Guide For Tires Of Subaru Forester
Stick with Subaru’s original tire sizes
The Forester is engineered for certain tire dimensions to work optimally with the all-wheel drive system. Consult your owner’s manual or current tire sidewall to find your correct size. Common sizes are 225/60R17 and 225/55R18.
Choose an all-season or winter tire
All-season tires can handle most weather conditions and are ideal for those who don’t see severe winter conditions. For heavy snow or icy areas, go with a specialty winter tire for maximum traction.
Research reputable tire brand
Major brands to consider include Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Continental, and Pirelli. Consumer reports can provide model-specific top picks after extensive treadwear testing.
Avoid no-name discount tires
While less expensive, these tires often use inferior materials and construction compared to major brands. This can impact traction, ride quality, noise levels, and longevity.
Buy 4 identical tires
Due to Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive, it’s vital that tread depth, size and make match across all four tires. Mixing and matching brands or tread depths causes drivetrain issues.
Check treadwear warranties
Many tires today come with 60,000 – 80,000+ mile tread life warranties for prorated reimbursement. This adds additional value to your tire purchase. High-mileage warranties indicate durable construction.
Inspect installation
Ensure tires are properly balanced and inflated when installed onto wheels. Poor mounting or balancing leads to vibration, uneven wear, and reduced tire life.
FAQs
What size tires does the Subaru Forester use?
Most Foresters use 225/60R17 or 225/55R18 tire sizes. Specific trim levels may have slightly different sizes. Always check your owner`s manual.
What is the recommended tire pressure for a Subaru Forester?
Recommended tire pressures vary by tire size, but generally range from 30-35 PSI for Forester models. The vehicle or driver’s door jamb sticker will list the exact recommended pressures.
How often should I rotate the tires on a Forester?
Subaru recommends rotating your Forester’s tires every 6,000-8,000 miles for even treadwear. Follow a front-to-back rotation pattern.
