“I’ve found the X-ones to be quite durable if not long-lasting, but then most CX tires are on the fragile side!

Is the G-ones more fragile than the X-ones do we think or just that it’s compared to gravel tires which tend to be burlier? I have some GravelKings which seem more robust than X-ones for a given pressure they squish less, I’m quite heavy and use CX/gravel bikes like MTB lite previous CX tires I’d ripped the sidewalls on, the X-ones were the first I wore out!”rogermerriman

“Purchased for use on my Topstone 2. It came with 700x37c riddlers (tan sidewall). I have looser gravel in my area and like to load the bike up pretty heavily. Because of this the 37’s were digging in more than I liked. I went ahead and got these 700x45c tires (black sidewall). They work great! They didn’t seem to affect my rolling resistance. Can still keep the same pace as the 37’s on my routes. (16 – 18mph). They don’t dig in nearly as much and can handle the single track well. Love the black sidewalls as well!

For reference, I do use tubes. Run tire pressure between 32 psi and 50 psi depending on my route.”Kevin Whitsett

Helpful Reviews

I’ve been through many, many ‘gravel’ tires before these. The WTBs have curated an image of gravel expertise but their tires are just awful if you expect to run them tubeless.

The Panaracer is good, but the tread is rather basic and wears unevenly. Clements/donelly felt squirmy. Then I remembered my mountain biking days and thought about how Maxxis rules the off-road tire industry.

Surely that know-how transfers over? So I purchased a pair of 47mm Ramblers and had a go with installing them. They were the first tires I’ve ever mounted that went on without too much effort (too little is not a good sign either) and inflated and sealed with a normal pump without any sealant. I went for a ride and noticed no difference in rolling resistance from the web Nanos–the rolling resistance champ–that we installed prior. So kudos to Maxxis, not an in-trend hipster brand for the gravitas out there, but they know how to make a damn good tire.”Blackthorne

“I’ve had these for a year now and put about 1k miles on them; about 50/50 road and gravel, with some trainer miles in the winter.

They are great on the road, fast-rolling, and relatively quiet. I think they are some of the faster rolling gravel tires you can buy. On gravel, they perform well, but these are more of a hard-packed or light gravel tire. I wouldn’t recommend them in mud or on large rocky stuff. They have been pretty tough; I never got a flat.

The one con is that the tread does not last long. After about 750 mi my rear tire was getting bald in the center. So not the longest-lasting tires, but for the price currently ($53) I think they are a good buy if you’re looking for a fast road and light gravel tire. I was able to set the bead with a hand pump, but they are tough to get over the rims.”M. Miller

“These tires are impressive. I run them on a Fezzari Empire Road bike and they have turned it into a shockingly capable mountain bike. The tire has a nice semi-slick fish scale pattern. The scales themselves have an angle cut into them and dig in surprisingly well without noticeably increasing rolling resistance.

The centerline grip is excellent on hardpack and even maintains its own in loose gravel. It rolls very fast on pavement, performs about as well as you would expect on loose climbs (it is a semi-slick after all), and shines on hardpack snow and ice.

The corner knobs give it a shockingly good bite without protruding too far. I originally ordered the 31c, but after measuring felt I could fit the 33c. Glad I did, the extra width has been excellent and they measure true to size on a DT Swiss 1800 wheel with an 18mm internal width; they could fill out well on a wider rim.

I like the square profile and they seem to corner well on the road, without any feeling of transition when rolling over between the scales and the lugs. Will be back for more, but so far they are wearing well. Vittoria has a hit on their hands with this one.”Cody Coonradt

“Great for Michigan gravel racing in dry conditions that are not overly loose (hardpack). Ran the 35mm rear w Gravelking SK 35 mm front, and it’s a great combo. Do not have a caliper but the Hutchinson is small to accurate, while the SK plumps out about 4mm in the 35mm I have, perhaps newer ones are more true to size. If you tend to climb out of the saddle the 35 may not work well for you, or size up to 38 and play with pressure.

The sidewalls feel like they have decent protection, yet the ride is very fast and supple. This is a very special tire. It does look like they will wear fast though. A decent tradeoff for a sticky compound. Don’t think anything can touch this tire for speed.

35mm rear and 38 front could work well, or a GK SK, Maxis Rambler, Schwalbe G-one front tire. If muddy, snowy, or re-graded roads choose GK SK or similar. Works incredibly well if you stay within its parameters. Slam dunk for speeds above 18-19 mph in hardpack.” Z39.50

“Tough tire, lots of grip on loose, steep, technical climbs up terrible rutted borderline mountain bike roads. They helped smooth out the fast washboard descents while maintaining confidence through corners and loose gravel.

I ran these in the 45mm tubeless on my Trek Checkpoint SL6 for a dry edition of the Wasatch All Road gravel race this weekend in Heber, Utah. I previewed the course with the stock 40mm Bontrager Team Issue GR1 tires and had a difficult time maintaining traction on the loose steep bits.

While on the other hand, I had total confidence running the Pirelli’s. I’m sure I sacrificed some rolling resistance on the smooth parts of the course but they lowered my stress overall. I was able to make it through 8 hours, 100 miles, and 11,000 feet of vert cleanly.

I’m sure I sacrificed some rolling resistance on the smooth parts but they lowered my stress and I think that was worth more to me overall. Plus, I think the bike looks super cool with these big burly bad boys!”Logan

“I bought the 700×38 tan-and-black, which looks very classy and trendy on my gravel bike. Tire width is 38.1mm (both) once installed.

I ride them at 45-50 psi, on both roads and hard trails, and have been very satisfied with their comfort, efficiency, and stability. Plus they appear to provide little rolling resistance (especially on the road) which is of course always appreciated.

Contrary to other gravel tires, this one maintains a roundish look (between the sidewalls) as it doesn’t have larger knobbies sticking out on the sides. This means a smooth transition from an upright to a slanted (when turning) position. But it could also mean less grip while riding off-road, although not a problem on gravel and hard trails.

I observed that the thread pattern in the center tends to hold onto small rocks and debris, which can be concerning regarding piercing through the casing. I haven’t ridden them enough to comment on longevity and puncture resistance. But I do check them and remove debris after riding them, which is a bit more maintenance than I’d like.

The installation was fair (on tubeless rims), although this varies (sometimes substantially) depending on the rims themselves and whether they are mounted with tubes or tubeless.

No issues thus far. A great tire for road, gravel, and hard trail riding.

5/17/2021 Update: a tiny piece of glass made its way through the center of the front tire, between some of the small square knobbies, and punctured the tube as well. At that time I went ahead with new wheels and mounted them tubeless (quite easily, without tools), after using a patch to seal the puncture. I ride them at 42-44 psi and they roll very”The 6th Rider

Choosing Tires for Gravel: Buying Guide:

1. Understanding the Gravel Terrain:

Before diving into the tire-buying process, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the terrain you’ll encounter. Gravel roads vary in their surface conditions, from loose gravel and dirt to compacted gravel. Keep in mind that your tire choice will heavily depend on the type of gravel you’ll be tackling. So, let’s get to know the beast we’re taming.

2. Tread Patterns

When it comes to choosing the right tire for gravel, tread patterns play a crucial role. The tire tread acts as your main assistant in grip and control. Opt for a tire with blocky or knobby tread patterns, as these provide excellent traction while dislodging loose rocks. Avoid smooth or low-profile treads as they won’t fare well on gravel surfaces.

3. Width and Size

Gravel roads can be unpredictable, so finding the perfect balance between comfort and performance is key. Opt for slightly wider tires, as they provide greater stability, improved traction, and better shock absorption on uneven terrains. Consider the wheel size too, as larger wheels with lower-profile tires generally offer better maneuverability and a smoother ride.

Tire size guide

4. Tire Pressure

Adjusting your tire pressure to match the terrain is like finding the perfect dance partner. For gravel roads, running your tires at a slightly lower pressure can help improve grip and traction, ensuring a safer ride. Lower pressures also allow the tires to absorb small bumps and resist punctures. However, keep in mind to strike a balance and avoid going too low, as this may make your bike sluggish.

FAQs

1. Why in general, gravel tires are 32mm to 45mm wide?

Wider tires provide better traction and stability on difficult terrain. However, to ensure compatibility with your bike frame, consider tire clearance parameters.

2. Can gravel tires be used on paved surfaces?

Tires are versatile and can be used on both gravel and paved surfaces. However, due to their wider size and aggressive tread patterns, they may cause slightly higher rolling resistance on paved roads compared to narrower slick tires. It’s crucial to find a balance between traction and rolling efficiency based on your typical terrain usage.

3. Are tubeless gravel tires worth considering?

Absolutely! Tubeless gravel tires have gained popularity due to their numerous advantages. They reduce the risk of flats, offer lower rolling resistance, provide improved grip on rough surfaces, and allow a wider range of tire pressures for enhanced comfort and performance. When combined with tubeless-compatible rims and sealant, they offer a reliable and puncture-resistant setup for adventurous gravel riders.

4. How do tire pressure requirements differ for gravel tires?

Gravel tire pressure largely depends on rider weight, tire dimensions, and terrain conditions. As a general rule, lower tire pressures (within the manufacturer’s recommendations) are preferred when riding on loose gravel terrain, as they increase traction and reduce the chances of washouts. However, for paved or hard-packed gravel surfaces, slightly higher tire pressures can improve overall rolling speed and efficiency.
