“Got them in 2015 and now 2021 they need a change. They are still road-legal but the depth is no longer good enough for heavy mud. I have completed just over 30k miles. It’s a farm vehicle that pulls a 3t horse muck tipper trailer into fields every week. It also goes down wet clay farm tracks which only the tractors go on.

For 6 months of the year, the field is very wet. By winter, the field is trashed and with the muck pile being pushed around by a tractor, there are a few inches of water and horses are on top of a few inches of sloppy mud and a lot of rutting from tractors and other vehicles dropping their muck off. It is a mud bath and it’s on a hill. For almost 5 years, I have not had any trouble getting in or out of the muck field with the trailer.

I have seen other vehicles struggle and get stuck. Some I have helped get out. I mention this as the trailer is a serious drag to pull through the slop yet these tires didn’t let me down. That is until recently. I have had to disconnect the trailer on two occasions. Grip returned without it but had to winch the trailer instead. Most mud tires start to give up their mud grip after around 50% wear.

These got to about 70% wear before I felt I was not getting the same grip. I could probably get another 10k road miles on them but the mud grip is now on par with an AT rather than an MT tire. Another characteristic is the tire is not that good when new. Fine in the mud and on a dry road in the wet, for the first 3000 odd miles they lack grip but that does come good later. Indeed, initially, I thought of changing them early.

However, it was early spring the weather soon improved and I decided to wait. Come Autumn with a few thousand more miles on them, the wet grip was much improved. I have experienced that with other tires where a mm or two of wear and the road grip improves. Road noise is typical of mud tires. They sing quite loudly in the wet but no more than other mud tires. Lastly, snow grip. Fantastic.

We use the defender as an emergency support vehicle during snow taking staff to the hospital and carrying things back and forth to those snowed in. It didn’t let me down once. I considered paying more and going with BFG KM3s. I would probably get an extra 20k miles out of those but they cost a third more. “2003 Ford Ranger Edge RWD prerunner 7″ lift front and 9″ back 315/75r16. Off-road these are walking my truck over everything. on semi-compact sand/shell rock trails at 50mph with over 90° turns back-to-back-to-back is like being on rails. They also slip and slide while allowing instant grip and grab.

Although they’re incredibly soft, they are outstandingly rigid. On the road these things are underrated. I’m running ~22 psi all around. After 7000 miles the tire is square, even, and has a solid footprint full time. They do predictably slow the truck down during shifts (manual transmission) because of this.

The trade-off is a gecko-like grip wet or dry. It would be very hard to hydroplane these. I can take sharp turns at high speed and intermittently slide the tires out to prevent flipping and go right back to grab the road. My edges are a little “erasers” but I’m shocked half the tread isn’t gone. Still haven’t reached the “nails” of the tread. All off/on road tests were legal*.”DavidC

“Yes, they make road noise, but it’s liveable. The large voids help keep the tread clear in mud and snow. I went on a recent snow run with other rigs running BFG KM2s, BFG ATs, BFG MTs, Goodyear MTR Kevlar, Cooper SSTs, Groundhawg, and Super Swamper Boggers. The only tires that universally cleared the tread from packed snow were the Boggers, the Groundhawgs (out of production?), and the Mud Grapplers. Even the Goodyear MTRs and the Cooper SST got packed up with snow and turned into slippery messes.

I don’t think these tires will win competitions like the Boggers because the voids are not as big, the tread is not as deep and the side biters are much smaller. But, on a day-to-day basis, the Mud Grappler is much easier to live with. It is a radial tire and handles like it. “These tires are on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee with a 3″ lift, front and rear ARB Air Lockers, 4.10 gears, and rear disc brake conversion using 2003 Liberty parts. My commute is 12 miles and I don’t need to travel on the highway, but I do some highway driving. The MTZ tires are the best all-around tires I’ve had on a 4×4. I’ve put 5000 miles on them so far. They appear to me to be the most aggressive MT tire out there in the 31″ size, except Interco Swampers. Maybe.

They are great off-road – mud, sand, rocks, and snow, and they completely blow away the Goodyear MT/Rs that they replaced on the street. I’ve now used them on dry, wet pavement, snow, and ice. The MT/Rs were terrible on snow and ice until they were siped on the center blocks, and they still weren’t great.

The M/T MTZ P3s are not the best snow and ice tire I’ve ever had, that goes to the old General Grabber AP, but there is no lack of traction and we had every kind of slippery situation imaginable this winter in Indiana. Noise is no worse than any other MT tire and better than most. Wet cornering and braking surpass my expectations of the vehicle and the tires – even compared to all-season or all-terrain tires. “As a long-time Cooper tire fan, these seemed like the obvious choice after all my research. I bought a set of 37×12.5R20 for my 2013 F250 because I’ve always been so impressed with Cooper’s performance and especially tread life. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT…. at first. Right out of the box, these tires are amazing. They ride well, they’re not loud, they balance out as expected, and handle inclement weather conditions very well. Off-road, WOW.

These tires might need to take an anger management class because they have some deep-seated aggression. They work great in mud, dirt, gravel, sand, water, snow… I couldn’t find anything with a hard bottom that would compromise their performance. Now, 10k miles, regular pressure checks, 2 rotations, 2 balances, and 2 alignment checks later… at 45mph and above, you just about can’t have a conversation inside the truck due to how loud these tires have become. I mean they are ridiculously loud.

The tread is down to 30-40% which might as well be zero because their tread self-cleaning ability is non-existent at this point, I got stuck in my yard. They have gotten to the point where they no longer pull, they just dig and don’t clean out. Now I have 4 perfect 14-inch holes in my yard.

They still handle inclement weather just fine on pavement but I can’t drive highway speeds without shaking every tooth out of my head or disintegrating the truck altogether. These would be great for a MUCH lighter truck that spends most of its time off-road, like a deer camp truck. Won’t EVER put them back on a daily driver. But I’ll still be a Cooper customer, just wish there was a treadwear warranty for these. If there is, I haven’t found it and for almost $3000 that’s disappointing. “I’ve had these tires on my 3-tonne Landcruiser 76 series for 2 years and 40,000km. It’s my daily driver, my weekend warrior, and my long-distance tourer. Previously I had Toyo AT2s which were okay but not quite durable enough for my liking. I do long-range remote solo touring through areas like the Victorian High Country and the Simpson Desert, so for me, reliability and durability are my number one priority. These tires have exceeded my expectations.

I’ve been through sand, shale, gravel, sandstone, clay, mud, highways, and flood waters. I have never found them lacking in traction and have never been bogged. They have a harsher rider and a bit more road noise compared to AT’s but it’s not excessive.

The Toyo MT is often criticised for having a stiff sidewall which can cause wheels to lose the bead if aired down but I haven’t found this to be an issue at all. They flex more than I expected under my 3T vehicle. At 40,000km they are about half worn with no major chipping, despite abusing them on some horrendous roads and not always airing down when I should.

I have not noticed a significant deterioration in on or off-road performance as they have aged. Comparatively, my Toyo AT2s started to understeer in the wet after about 20,000kms. They are not the cheapest but also not the most expensive and, in my opinion, excellent value for money. They have a proven track record and are relied on by many hard-core 4WDers, not just paid social media muppets like with some other brands. They are the best mud tires for strength, durability, reliability, and longevity. I have the utmost confidence that my Toyo MTs will get me to my destination and home again.
